Almost every property in the Valley has a block perimeter wall, and almost all of them crack eventually. Ground movement, thermal cycling, irrigation at the base, a car backing into a gate post.
We repair block walls and fences the same way we repair houses, which means the fix gets matched to what is already there instead of standing out as a grey patch.

What we repair
Cracked and spalling block. Surface flaking, chipped faces, and cracks running through the block itself rather than the mortar.
Separated mortar joints. Repointing and rebuilding where the joints have opened up or washed out.
Stair-step cracking. The diagonal pattern that follows the mortar joints. Usually settling or ground movement, and worth understanding before repairing so it does not simply return.
Stuccoing over bare block. Taking a plain grey block wall and finishing it to match the house.
Pool enclosure walls. Constant moisture, splash-out and chemical exposure at the base, which is a different failure pattern from a dry perimeter wall.
Gate and column posts. The most commonly damaged part of any perimeter wall, usually by a vehicle.
Retaining walls. Where there is soil pressure and drainage behind the wall, not just weather on both sides.
Why Valley block walls fail
Caliche and soil movement. Our soils move, and a long unbroken run of block with insufficient control joints will crack where the movement concentrates. Stair-step cracks through the mortar are almost always this.
Irrigation at the base. A drip line or sprinkler head aimed at the bottom of a wall for years saturates the block, carries salts to the surface as efflorescence, and eventually spalls the face off.
Thermal cycling. Same 30 to 40 degree daily swing that cracks house stucco. A block wall is exposed on both sides, so it moves more than a house wall does.
Age. A lot of Valley perimeter walls went in during the 1970s and 80s. Fifty years of sun on unprotected block adds up.
HOA walls and shared walls
Two things worth knowing before you call anybody.
Many Valley communities have HOA standards covering perimeter wall finish and color, and repairs have to match them. Bring us the standard and we will work to it.
If the wall sits on a property line, it may be a shared wall, and responsibility for repairs is worth clarifying with your neighbor before the work starts rather than after. We are happy to quote it either way, including splitting an invoice.
What it costs

Common questions
Can a cracked block wall be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Almost always repaired. Replacement is for walls that are leaning, structurally unsound, or cracked along most of their run. A cracked section is a repair.
Will the repair match?
If the wall is stuccoed, yes, same texture and color matching we do on houses. If it is bare block, matching a fifty-year-old block face is harder and we will be honest with you about what is achievable before starting.
My neighbor and I share the wall. Who pays?
That is between the two of you, and it usually depends on where the wall actually sits relative to the property line and what your HOA or CC&Rs say. We can quote the work and invoice it however you agree.
Why does my wall have white powder on the base?
Efflorescence. Mineral salts carried to the surface by water moving through the block, and it almost always means irrigation or drainage is putting water against the wall. Worth fixing the water source before repairing the wall.
Can you stucco over an existing block wall?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest ways to make an older property look considerably better. We can match it to the house or finish it to an HOA standard.
