Holes in Valley stucco come from a short list of usual suspects. Old satellite dishes, removed light fixtures and house numbers, solar mounting brackets, a ladder that got away from somebody, dust storm debris, and around here, woodpeckers.

Woodpecker holes

Its own section, because it is an Arizona problem and homeowners are usually surprised by it.

Gila woodpeckers and northern flickers drill into stucco, typically on the sunnier elevations, often in a row a few feet apart. They are after nesting cavities, not insects, which means patching alone is sometimes not the end of it. If the wall is hollow behind the stucco, a patched hole can get redrilled a few feet over the following spring.

We patch and match the holes. For the recurrence problem, filling the cavity or adding deterrents near the eave is the actual fix, and we will walk you through what has and has not worked for other customers. Note that these birds are federally protected, so the answer is always exclusion rather than removal.

Solar and satellite leftovers

Two very common Valley jobs.

Satellite dishes. Usually four or six lag bolts into the wall. The anchors have to come out and the voids filled properly. A skim coat over an anchor hole cracks in a ring shape within a year, which is why you can spot a lazy dish repair from the street.

Solar mounting. If panels came off, or a roof mount was relocated, the penetrations need sealing correctly, not just filling. These sit high on the wall where water runs, so a poor repair turns into a water problem rather than a cosmetic one.

How we do it

Small holes. Clean out loose material, undercut the edges so the patch has something to grip, fill in lifts rather than all at once so it cures properly, then texture and color match.

Holes through to the lath. Cut back to sound material, install new paper and lath with proper overlap, then rebuild the coats. Skipping the paper is the shortcut that shows up as a water problem two monsoons later.

Fixture and anchor holes. Anchor comes out, void gets filled, then patched. No skimming over hardware.

Common questions

Can I use a patch kit from the hardware store?

For a small hole in a smooth wall, maybe. The two things that trip people up are texture and color. Premixed patch dries a different shade than a wall that has been in Arizona sun for twenty years, and matching a lace or knockdown finish by hand takes practice.

How long before I can paint it?

Cement-based patches want 7 to 14 days to cure before paint. Painting early traps moisture and causes blistering, which happens a lot here because people rush it before a monsoon.

Will it match?

Texture, yes. Color, very close, and it evens out as the patch weathers. If the wall is badly faded, sometimes the honest answer is that painting the whole elevation gives a better result than chasing a perfect match, and we will say so.

Do you fix holes in block walls and fences?

What about a hole that goes all the way through?

Then the paper and lath behind it have to be rebuilt, not just skimmed over. It costs more, and it is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails at the next monsoon.
